On 8 August 2026, RHSTEP’s Aparajeyo Tarunno (Unlocking Youth Potential) Chattogram Centre organized a session titled “Empower Young Women and Engage Youth with Disabilities in Health Reform Efforts” to promote inclusive participation in health reform and strengthen the role of young people in creating an equitable healthcare environment.
The session was chaired by Apu Dasgupta, Project Officer, Aparajeyo Tarunno Chattogram Centre. The discussion was led by Md. Jasim Uddin, Deputy Director, District Social Services Office, and Safia Begum, Representative of a Disability Organization. The session was moderated by Annie Chowdhury, Youth Officer.
The speakers highlighted that although significant progress has been made toward ensuring equal rights for women and men, many young women still face various forms of discrimination in accessing healthcare, participating in decision-making and taking on leadership roles.
The discussion identified several social and structural barriers that continue to limit young women’s opportunities, including socio-economic challenges, gender-based stereotypes, early marriage, limited access to education and lack of awareness. These challenges can restrict young women’s ability to make informed decisions, access essential health services and participate meaningfully in leadership and community affairs.
The session also emphasized the importance of ensuring the meaningful participation of youth with disabilities in health reform efforts. Inclusive approaches that recognize the diverse needs, experiences and capabilities of young people were highlighted as essential for developing a more accessible and equitable health system.
Participants discussed the importance of creating opportunities for young women and youth with disabilities to actively contribute to health-related decision-making, leadership and community initiatives. The session encouraged participants to challenge discriminatory attitudes and support an environment where everyone can enjoy equal rights, dignity and opportunities.
The discussion concluded with an emphasis on the fact that removing barriers to equality and inclusion is not only important for empowering women and marginalized groups but is also essential for building a healthy, just and sustainable society. Through initiatives such as this session, RHSTEP continues to engage young people in health reform, gender equality and inclusive development.
